Darfur Conflict
An event that has taken place within the last two years is the Darfur Conflict. The Darfur Conlict began in Darfur, Sudan in February of 2003 and is still going on. The people that are involved in this even are the People of Darfur and the Janjaweed. The people of Darfur were being kicked out of their homes and sent to refugee camps. The camps couldn't give the people in them food and water because of the Janjaweed. The Janjaweed are members of the Arab Tribes that have been at odds for a while with Darfur's settled African farmers who are black. The armies are involved in the conflict too. This event was caused because the Sudanese didn't help and talk about the problems that were going on. There were also no food or water in some places and the people were getting mad.
The war in Darfur's current lines of conflict link back to ethic and tribal rather than religious. On 5 May 2006, the Sudanese government and Darfur's largest rebel group, the SLM (Sudanese Liberation Movement), signed the Darfur Peace Agreement, which aimed at ending the three-year-long conflict. The agreement specified the disarmament of the Janjaweed and the disbandment of the rebel forces, and aimed at establishing a temporal government in which the rebels could take part. The agreement, which was brokered by the African Union. However only one rebel group actually signed-the SLA, led by Minni Arko Minnawi. Since the agreement was signed, though, there were reports of violence throughout the region. A new rebel group was formed called the National Redemption Front, which consisted of the four main rebel groups that refused to sign the May peace agreement.
